Trip to Te Aroha

On Friday night we went to Waihou, near Te Aroha, to stay with Emma's parents - Peter and Suzanne. The house that Pete built was lovely, in the middle of the Hauraki plains, in dairy land. We had a leisurely evening on Friday night over dinner and a few bottles of wine and went to bed early. On Saturday morning we drove to Paeroa to see the famous big L&P bottle and the Paeroa farmer's market. The market was disappointing but the L&P was great. We continued onto the Karanghake gorge and walked up past the old power station to the rapids.

We then moved onto the Ohinemuri winery for lunch with Emma's parents and enjoyed a bottle of Gewurztraminer with our Venison and risotto, smoked chicken salad and scallops in bacon. Delicious! We spent the afternoon looking at a local pottery and messing around in the garden at the house before Dan cooked a dinner from the kitchen garden and we watched Little Miss Sunshine.

This morning we left Waihou for Auckland, after a brunch of bacon, red pepper and cheese muffins and grapefruit juice from the garden.

This afternoon Daf and I finally made it to Devonport to meet Keith and Barbra Wilson - Daf's granny's cousins. We had tea and cakes with them before climbing Mt Victoria to make the most of the day and the exceptional view. On the way back across the harbour, we savoured a very quick bottle of Speights summer harvest ale on the 9 minute ferry crossing.
